Redesign of ColumbiaMissourian.com

ColumbiaMissourian.com post-launch

I redesigned and re-launched this site, as part of my degree requirement of a professional project. My full proposal more accurately describes the nitty gritty details, but the general gist is that I’ll be making the site more user-friendly with a Web 2.0 look, better navigation, integrated mapping services and more interactive features. The design is loosely based on the Vox layout, which is a publication of the Columbia Missourian.

This project took a full semester to complete. Before the redesign and archive features, few print readers knew Vox even had a website. The new site features calendar, restaurant and movie listings, in addition to social networking features such as user comments and the ability to post news events and reviews. This site served as the blueprint for more Web features, built within the Django framework.

Calendar editors now enter their events into an online form, which spits out a text document, which, with some additional editing, makes its way into the print publication.

I was approached a few days before the project was to launch with the knowledge that a group of convergence students was putting together some video footage of the candidates. This package groups all the videos, profiles and photos into one area, for a fuller picture of each candidate. When election results were announced, the feature was updated to indicate winners.

Roanoke’s photographers needed a way to showcase and talk about their favorite sports images. Using the Movable Type content management system and Soundslides tool, this site puts digital storytelling in photographers’ hands. With minimal effort and coding, they can display their photographs, record their thoughts and publish online.

Again, this project used the Movable Type content management system to enable future stories to be seamlessly integrated into an ongoing series of stories. A team of reporters, editors and photographers put together a series that continues to elicit community reaction and interaction.

The TimesCast is a daily video log of the stories Roanoke staffers are tackling. I was honored to host the program on a few occasions. More importantly, I made sure the video, links and teaser appeared online by our 3:30 deadline.

Using Flash software and graphics from the newsroom, I was part of a team that brought the flooding of a reservoir to life. With a flat graphic, users could only imagine the way the dam broke. But the interactive infographic added another dimension to the graphic.

My time at KOMU.com was short-lived, but I edited dozens of broadcast stories for the Web. I also cut and posted video from the accompanying broadcast.
